Procrastinate the right way!
You know
the feeling. You've got an email you need to write, a paper you need to turn
in, a form you need to fill out, or an enormous pile of laundry that needs
washing. But all you want to do is kick back on the couch, watch Netflix, and
think about all the important work you're not doing. It doesn’t help feeling
guilty either.
Putting
off your work isn’t such a bad thing. It is the ‘universal state of being for
humans.’ We will, at any given point of time, have more things on our plate
than we could possibly handle. That’s where learning how to procrastinate comes
in.
Helps productivity
Why do it
now if you can panic about it at the eleventh hour? Use this tendency to take
better decisions and get more done. Remember your procrastination only helps
your productivity, if you actually use the time you’re taking on productive
things. Otherwise, you’re only being efficient at shaping your couch’s
hollowness.
It has
constantly being drilled into us that procrastination is a bad thing. So why
embrace it? Let me tell you this. Historians say otherwise. Greeks and Romans
regarded procrastination highly.
Managing delay
Managing delay is an important tool. People
tend to be more happy and successful when they manage delay. Delayed apologies
are more effective as they give the wronged party a chance to tell how they
feel in response.
Prioritise
Procrastination helps you prioritize
in your life. People are less inclined to procrastinate towards things that
give them joy, passion and purpose. Procrastination gives more time to gather
information, analyse and strategize.
Time pressure
Isaac Newton did not have an apple
fall on his head. Thomas Edison didn’t suddenly discover the light bulb. This
tells us that great things always take time.
If we are to solve long-term problems, we need to create a structure where people are given larger periods of time without time pressure to achieve maximum results.
